HOW IT WORKS

This calculator estimates your 2026 federal income tax using standard deduction and tax brackets. It applies the progressive tax rate structure: you pay different rates on income within each bracket. Results are simplified and should be used as rough estimates only.

UNDERSTANDING TAX BRACKETS

Progressive System: The US uses a progressive tax system where higher income levels are taxed at higher rates. You don't pay the top rate on all your income—only on the portion within each bracket.

Example: If you're single with $50,000 income, you pay 10% on the first $11,925, 12% on income from $11,925 to $48,475, and 22% only on the remaining amount above $48,475.

Standard Deduction: This amount is automatically subtracted from your income before calculating tax. For 2026: $14,600 (single), $29,200 (married filing jointly), $21,900 (head of household).

Effective Tax Rate: Your average rate across all income, typically much lower than your top bracket rate.

WHAT THIS CALCULATOR DOESN'T INCLUDE

Not included: State and local taxes, FICA taxes (Social Security/Medicare), itemized deductions, tax credits (child tax credit, earned income credit, etc.), capital gains, alternative minimum tax, or self-employment tax.

For more accurate results: Consider consulting a tax professional or using comprehensive tax software that accounts for your specific situation.
